Peter Childs – Imperial College, London

  • Professorial Lead in Engineering Design at Imperial College London, having taken up this chair in 2008, and leader of the Design Engineering group
  • Joint course Director of the Innovation Design Engineering degree with the Royal College of Art and Imperial
  • Former director of InQbate, the HEFCE funded Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning in Creativity
  • Previously Director of the Rolls-Royce supported University Technology Centre for Aero-Thermal Systems
  • General interests include: creativity; the application of creative tools; mechanical and product design; desalination; sustainability and energy components, concept and system design, rotating flow and heat transfer
  • Recently developed the thinking behind ‘commercivity,’ the ability to come up with ideas that can be exploited for sustainable commercial gain
  • Key research contributor to the Vodafone Future Agenda project and one of only two keynote speakers to launch this in 2010;  involved 50,000 people globally looking at world trends by 2020
  • High-level transport speaker including NASA in December 2011
  • Programme 111 Professor working with in China with Beihang University and collaborations with Tsinghua University
  • Has published more than 10 books including texts on mechanical design, rotating flow and temperature
